This class introduces you to the xTool Apparel Printer Plus and its companion equipment: the OS1 shaker oven, the WonderPress heat press, and the AP2 air filtration unit. Together they safely support the full direct-to-film process, from design to finished garment.

What is DTF (Direct-To-Film) Printing?

DTF printing takes a digital design and puts it onto a clear film, coats it with adhesive powder, and cures it. You ‘transfer’ that print by pressing the film onto fabric with heat and pressure. It works on cotton, polyester, and blends, in any color, and handles full-color artwork that would be difficult with vinyl or screen printing.

You will learn how to:

• Prepare a simple design in xTool Studio

• Monitor the print, powder, and cure cycle

• Load a shirt and heat press a finished transfer

• Peel and complete the second press

• Shut down and clean up the work area

With the successful completion of this class, you'll be authorized to use the xTool Apparel Printer with a Maker Works membership. As part of our initial offering, we will provide a day pass that is valid within 90 days of having taken the class. This gets you a two hour reservation on the apparel printer, enough time to print 5-10 shirts!

How much does printing shirts cost?

We estimate around $5.50 per shirt for a run of 10, covering the blank shirt, ink, and transfer film over roughly 2 hours of work. Maker Works is not selling blanks at this time, so bring your own or use one of the sources we recommend. With our initial offering you get a day pass* that includes a two hour reservation. After that a day pass is $50 , putting a 10-shirt run at around $10.50 per shirt, roughly half what a typical online retailer charges.

Can I heat press onto something other than a shirt?

Yes! While this class teaches the basics of how to print and press a shirt, much of that knowledge can be applied to other fabrics and materials. Note that some items may not be safe for either you or the machines.
