Electronics Classes

Learn to use a soldering iron, a printed circuitboard engraver, or get a grasp on the basics of CNC (computerized numerical control).

  • You only need membership in order to use tools independently.
Membership is not required to take a class.

  • Membership is required to use any tool, and most also require a Tool Training class.

Once you’re trained on a tool, reserve it if necessary.

The electronics studio has only two reservable machines: the reflow oven and the printed circuitboard (PCB) engraver.

Every other electronics tool does not require a reservation, such as: the soldering irons, test equipment, microscopes, and hand tools.

  • To make a reservation, visit the “Reserve a Tool” page.

Our universal reservation policy is 2 hours per tool per day per member. If you know you’ll need longer, notify staff ahead of time. If you unexpectedly need an extension, notify staff 30 minutes before the end of your reservation.

  • No hourly charge. Once you’re a member and have taken the Tool Training (if needed), you can use the tool at no extra cost.

Some tools should be reserved in advance, but reservations are free when you are a member. (Note: You cannot use tools as a non-member, so you cannot make reservations.)

  • For classes:
No need to prepare ahead of time or take notes unless you want to.

    For using a tool:
    - Use the provided tooling and consumables.
    - Bring your own material — we sell very little.
    - Check the tool’s page for any required items (rare).

For generally being in the electronics studio:
    - We recommend but do not require closed-toed shoes (required if you want to visit the wood or metal shop).
