Dale's Custom CNC Pen Plotter: A Sneak Peek into Our CNC Weekend Workshop

Dale has been hard at work building a custom CNC Pen Plotter for the “Intro to G-Code” portion of our CNC Intensive Weekend workshop, where attendees will safely learn the ins and outs of operating four CNC machines: Epilog Laser, ShopBot Router, Plasma Cutter, and Tormach Mill.

While Dale says he has a little more cable management work to do, the pen plotter is already a beautiful build and outputs fantastic hilbert curves! Check out the video below to see it in action. How many times does that pen lift up? : )

What is CNC?

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, a technology that automates the control of tools with a computer. At Maker Works, a number of CNC machines are used daily (take a tour!):

But you said G-CODE? What’s that?

Dale will be using the CNC Pen Plotter to introduce people to G-Code, “the language used by many CNC machines to direct their movements and other tasks.”.

Typically when someone needs to use a CNC Machine, they will:

  1. Create a design (Computer Aided Design, or CAD) with a program like Inkscape, Fusion 360, or V-Carve.

  2. Convert the design (Computer Aided Machining, or CAM) to a language and file the machine will understand (G-Code). Typically the file containing the g-code is a series of commands telling the machine where and when to move, and how quickly.

  3. Run the generated G-Code on the CNC Machine.

With step 2, CAM software will usually show the user a virtual toolpath, or what their object will look like during and after it is processed on the machine. It hides the G-Code. As a result, beginners don’t really need to see or understand the language. But it can be very handy for intermediate and advanced users. A basic understanding can help diagnose problems and overcome limitations that may be presented in post processing or at the machine.
