Emco 4-axis CNC Mill
tool training
Duration: 2.5 hours
Class Size: 3 people
Price: $90
Ages: 16+ (13-15 with guardian)
About the Emco Mill
The Emco F1 is a computer-controlled (CNC) milling machine located in our jewelry studio. It is designed for small cutters and softer materials such as machinable wax. Because of contamination concerns in the jewelry studio, this mill is not suitable for aluminum, steel, or any other ferrous/harder materials — for those materials, please use the Tormach CNC mill or Bridgeport manual mill in our metal shop.
File Preparation
This machine requires a G-code file for operation. Typically, you’ll create or obtain a 3D model (such as an STL), then process it in CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software to generate G-code. At Maker Works, we have Fusion 360 classes that teach its CAD and CAM features. For any CAD/CAM software other than Fusion 360, we cannot guarantee staff support.
*Note that some no-cost or low-cost Fusion 360 licenses may not support 4th axis operations.
Jewelry Applications
For many jewelry projects, using a 3D printer is faster and easier than machining wax if your goal is lost-wax casting, especially if you have no prior experience. However, the Emco is available if you prefer CNC milling.
During Class
This class will introduce you to the Emco F1 CNC vertical milling machine. You will learn basic operation with an emphasis on safety, but we do not cover file setup. With the successful completion of this class you will be certified to use the Emco F1 CNC mill on your own, with membership.
People ages 13-15 may take this tool checkout class with their parent/guardian (both adult and minor must register and pay). A parent/guardian who has taken the checkout class must also accompany them when operating the tool. Ages 16 and up are encouraged to take checkout classes in any area they wish, with parent/guardian approval.
